MAFA affirms the importance of binding arbitration as an option in response
to the suggestion of the establishment of an Industrial Inquiry Commission.

4, 1999: "Senator Urges End to Mount Allison Strike". As the third
week of the strike begins Senator Mabel M. DeWare calls for a resolution
in a letter to President Ian Newbould.

30, 1999: "MAFA Questions Budget Priorities - Picket Lines Remain".
Includes comparisons with other undergraduate institutions on the percentage
of the operating budget spent on academics and administration.

28, 1999: "National Support for Mount Allison Faculty". Representatives
from faculty associations across Canada arrive for a National Day of
Protest.

27, 1999: "Mount Allison Staff and CUPE Members Join Faculty on
Picket Line". The other Mount Allison unions announce that they will
join the National Day of Protest.

of University Teachers to Join MAFA Strikers Friday". Support builds
around the meeting of the Board of Regents.

18, 1999: "Mount Allison Strike Date Announced". The strike date
is announced and MAFA's members' resolve hardens in reaction to the
administration's unprecedented threat to discontinue benefit plans should
there be a strike.

15, 1999: "Mount Allison faculty authorize job action". The strike
vote is 85% in favour and the two faculty representatives to the Board
of Regents resign to join their colleagues in support of job action.
- December
22, 1998: "CAUT to appoint Committee of Inquiry in Thorpe Case".
An inquiry is announced into the denial of the honorary title of Professor
Emeritus to Michael Thorpe.

15, 1998: "Conciliation process wraps up at Mount Allison". Negotiatons
under conciliation break down and 95% of MAFA members vote to support
the negotiation team with strike action if necessary.
- November
24, 1998: "Mount Allison faculty and librarians back negotiating
team in vote by members". MAFA members vote 95% in favour of supporting
the negotiating team with strike action if necessary.
- November
17, 1998: "Faculty calls on administration to reorient its priorities".
The administration has allowed student numbers to rise while faculty
numbers drop.
- November
2, 1998: "Mount Allison Faculty Association calls for Conciliator".
MAFA calls for conciliation to bridge impasse on issues of quality,
equity and respect.
